A LAVA STONE, NATURAL OR GLAZED, COMING FROM THE ETNA LAVA FRAGMENTS

capperi
Caper plant or “capparis spinosa” is a bush-shaped perennial shrub growing spontaneously on rocks and on the walls of old houses in the Mediterranean coastlines.

The caper healthy and therapeutic characteristics have been known ever since. Flavonoid glucosidle, which are some of the caper components, are able to protect human skin from the damages caused by an excessive sun exposure, sunrash and skin ageing. Caper extract has turned out to be very effective in inhibiting the inflammatory process caused by sunrays.

Glass painting

pitture-vetro

Glass painting dates back to the end of 17th century and the first decades of 19th century. As a popular art form, it developed all over Europe almost at the same time. The paintings that largely depict religious iconography are tempera made and acquire a particular transparency and brightness.

In Sicily the traditional, stereotyped iconography is given a new dimension by glass painting by means of realistic elements of everyday life. Our Ladies and virgins pick up spikes and cook bean soups; thanks to miracle events, saints defend from plague, diseases and famines and protect the field and craft working.

Very bright colors and detailed decorations make the Sicilian glass painting more genuine and direct as compared to other countries.

A LAVA STONE, NATURAL OR GLAZED, COMING FROM THE ETNA LAVA FRAGMENTS

manna_pomodoro
Manna
, through a cut on the ash tree bark gushes out and in the summer heat becomes white and sweet. It is an extremely healthy and unique product all over the world.

Today manna can only be found in the northern part of Sicily overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the area of Castelbuono and Pollina.

Although people have been trying to substitute it with artificial manna, the natural one has survived over the centuries. Still today it is picked up with great care and appreciated for its numberless and generous benefits.

The tomato is a natural antioxidant capable to protect human cells from ageing. It is possible to extract the tomato lycopene for several cosmetic aims by producing oil from tomato skins. Its pulp is a basic ingredient for skin masks, which are nourishing and toning. It is recommended to smoothen and nourish dry skins and mixed up with olive oil it can soothe redden skin caused by an excessive sun exposure.

Sicilian puppet

pupi

The Sicilian puppet theatre was born in the 19th century and tells about the knights’ deeds played by puppets from the French Royal family to Orlando Innamorato (Roland in Love) and Orlando Furioso (Furious Roland), from the wars against Spanish Moors to the Roncisvalle route.

The theatre equipment was and still is made up of puppets and placards of course but also of canvas paintings illustrating the deeds: every single placard was disassembled into several squares where the story ran; the placards were hung either in the theatre hall or in the nearby square like advertising posters. The public became very fond of the long deed cycle which, in the old drafts, was performed 371 times in a row.

Today the Puppet Theatre is best performed by the Associazione Figli d’Arte Cuticchio, founded by Giacomo Cuticchio, the pupil to the famous Achille Greco. He opened his first theatre in 1933, a travelling theatre from 1943 to 1969 when he settled in Palermo and opened the Super Teatro “Ippogrifo” situated in the city Quattro Canti. Today Mimmo Cuticchio is acknowledged as the one who continued, affirmed and relaunched the family tradition. In 1997 he started the first puppeteers and storytellers’ school. In 2001 the UNESCO conferred the “Verbal and Immaterial Patrimony of Mankind” recognition to the Puppet Theatre.

In Sicilian popular tradition the prickly pear is used to smoothen sun rash and help to heal wounds. The phytocosmetic line is made from prickly pear pulp juice; it has a moisturizing effect and makes our skin elastic thanks to natural polysaccharide and mucilage. It is very softening, lenitive and revitalizing for dry chapped skins.
